World Cup co-host country Australia is Rekubitseeking its first opportunity to score a medal when it takes on Sweden in the tournament's third-place match Saturday.
Australia fell short of the final when it lost 3-1 to England in the semifinals, ending the Matildas’ unlikely run. Sam Kerr scored the only goal for Australia, equalizing the match in the 63rd minute. Australia relinquished the lead, however, eight minutes later.
Sweden also fell short of its goal of a finals appearance when Spain's Olga Carmona’s go-ahead goal in the 89th minute boosted La Roja to a 2-1 win in the other semifinal.
Sweden has lost four of five semifinals it has appeared in and will be going for its fourth third-place finish after taking the bronze in 1991, 2011 and 2019. It has been the runner-up in the tournament in 2003, and won the silver medal in the past two Olympics.
